History of PNG

PNG was created in 1994. It was developed as an alternative to GIF using lossless compression (LZW compression). It was designed so that people could use it without licensing issues. The development of PNG started in 1995, and later in 2003, PNG became an international standard. It has been officially approved as an international standard by ISO/IEC (ISO/IEC 15948).
